Dental Treatment

Scaling, Polishing & Gum Treatment

Professional teeth cleaning, gum disease treatment and bad breath solutions — the foundation of every healthy smile, performed by BDS-qualified dentists at DHA Phase 6.

Scaling, Polishing & Gum Treatment treatment at House of Aesthetics, DHA Phase 6 Lahore

What Is It?

Healthy Gums Are the Foundation of Every Great Smile

You can have the whitest teeth in the room and still have gum disease silently destroying the bone that holds them in place. Periodontal health — the health of your gums and supporting structures — is the non-negotiable foundation of all other dental work. Veneers on diseased gums fail. Implants in an unhealthy jaw fail. Healthy gums first.

At House of Aesthetics, every new patient receives a full periodontal assessment before any cosmetic dental work. Our BDS-certified dentists use ultrasonic scalers and Gracey curettes to remove calculus deposits above and below the gum line, assess pocket depths, and create a treatment plan for any active disease.

Whether you need a routine 6-monthly clean and polish, deep root planing for established gum disease, bad breath assessment and treatment, or gum surgery referral, our dental team manages the full spectrum of periodontal care — always with honest advice and no up-selling.

Full Perio Assessment

The Process

How It Works

1

Periodontal Assessment

Your dentist charts pocket depths around each tooth, assesses gum recession, checks for bleeding on probing, and reviews X-rays to evaluate bone levels. This assessment determines whether you need standard cleaning or active disease treatment.

2

Scaling (Supra & Subgingival)

Ultrasonic scaling removes tartar and plaque above the gum line and in the shallow gum pockets. For patients with deeper pockets or active gum disease, subgingival scaling (root planing) is performed under local anaesthetic.

3

Polishing & Stain Removal

After scaling, the teeth are polished with a fine prophylaxis paste to remove surface stains and smooth the enamel, making it harder for plaque to re-attach. Air polishing may be used for patients with heavy staining from tea, coffee, or smoking.

4

Hygiene Instruction & Maintenance Plan

Your dentist reviews your brushing and flossing technique, recommends appropriate home care products, and sets a personalised recall interval — 3, 4, or 6 months — based on your gum health and risk factors.

Your Care Guide

Pre & Post Treatment Care

Before Your Treatment

  • Brush and floss as normal before your appointment — do not avoid cleaning in anticipation
  • Inform your dentist of any medications, particularly blood thinners, bisphosphonates, or immunosuppressants
  • If you have a heart condition or joint replacement, inform us — antibiotic cover may be required
  • Avoid eating a heavy meal immediately before treatment if you are sensitive to dental procedures
  • Bring a list of any dental concerns — bleeding gums, sensitivity, loose teeth, or bad breath — to discuss

After Your Treatment

  • Expect mild gum tenderness and sensitivity for 24–72 hours after scaling — this is normal
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and sensitive toothpaste for 1–2 weeks after deep cleaning
  • Avoid very hot, cold, or acidic foods for 24–48 hours if sensitivity is present
  • Continue your regular brushing and flossing routine — do not avoid the treated areas
  • Use any prescribed antibacterial mouthwash as directed for the recommended period
  • Book your next cleaning at the interval recommended by your dentist and do not skip it

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Dental scaling is the professional removal of tartar (calculus) and plaque build-up from the teeth and below the gum line — deposits that cannot be removed by regular brushing or flossing alone. Tartar is hardened plaque that harbours bacteria, causing gum inflammation, bleeding, and, if left untreated, bone loss around the teeth. Most adults need scaling every 6–12 months depending on their plaque accumulation rate. It is the single most effective preventive dental procedure available.

No — professional dental scaling does not damage enamel when performed correctly by a qualified dentist. This is a common misconception. Scaling removes calculus deposits that sit on top of the tooth surface; it does not strip or thin the enamel. Ultrasonic scalers used at HOA are calibrated to remove deposits safely without affecting tooth structure. The temporary sensitivity some patients feel after scaling is from exposed root surfaces previously covered by tartar — it typically resolves within 1–2 weeks.

Root planing is a deeper cleaning procedure for patients with gum disease (periodontitis). When gum disease progresses, bacteria get below the gum line and attach to the root surface, causing pockets between the gum and tooth. Root planing smooths and cleans the root surface to remove bacterial deposits and help the gum reattach to the tooth. It is performed under local anaesthetic and is more intensive than a standard scaling appointment. It is usually done in quadrants over 2–4 appointments.

Chronic bad breath (halitosis) is most commonly caused by bacteria in the mouth — particularly on the back of the tongue, in gum pockets, and around poorly cleaned teeth and restorations. Other causes include gum disease, dry mouth, acid reflux, and systemic conditions. Professional scaling removes the primary bacterial reservoirs. We also address tongue hygiene, check for gum pockets, and review diet and oral hygiene habits. For most patients, bad breath is completely treatable with proper dental care.

Early gum disease (gingivitis): bleeding when brushing, red or swollen gums, persistent bad breath. Advanced gum disease (periodontitis): gums pulling away from teeth, loose teeth, visible bone loss on X-ray, pus between teeth and gums, and teeth that appear longer. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults — and it is largely preventable with regular professional cleaning and good home hygiene.

Standard scaling and polishing causes minimal discomfort and is performed without anaesthetic for most patients. Root planing is performed under local anaesthetic so the procedure itself is painless. Some soreness and sensitivity for 24–72 hours after deep cleaning is normal and managed with over-the-counter pain relief. The thought of the treatment is usually much worse than the experience itself.

For most adults with healthy gums, a professional scale and polish every 6 months is the standard recommendation. Patients with a history of gum disease, smokers, diabetics, or those with orthodontic appliances may benefit from 3–4 monthly cleaning. Your dentist will assess your specific risk profile and recommend the ideal interval for you.

Yes — this is well-established in the medical literature. Gum disease is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, poorly controlled diabetes, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and respiratory infections. The mouth-body connection is real. Treating gum disease is not just about your smile — it has measurable benefits for your systemic health.

Our Standard of Care

Every Procedure. Every Time. A Qualified Doctor.

In Pakistan, many aesthetic and dental clinics use unqualified technicians for procedures that legally and ethically require a doctor. At House of Aesthetics, that is not how we operate — and never will be.

🩺

MBBS & BDS Qualified Only

Every aesthetic and dental procedure is performed by a doctor holding a recognised medical degree — MBBS for skin and aesthetic treatments, BDS for all dental work. No exceptions.

📋
